Residential Air Conditioning

Summer in Australia is hot, winter is cold. And what are the best residential air conditioning solutions for homes around Australia?

There are 2 types, single split systems and ducted. Both these systems are designed to cool or heat your home depending on the weather outside. They are quiet and can be easily hidden away.

Split system air conditioners work by pumping refrigerant gas through the unit’s cooling circuit. Unlike old, noisy box style air conditioners, the cooling circuit can be at a different location to where the air is released, meaning a lot less noise. The gas pump is strong enough to push the gas through the condenser and turns into liquid which is pushed into the evaporator which expands the liquid and turns it back into gas. This expanding drops the temperature quickly and efficiently (and the opposite is true for heating). The unit also draws in the hot air from the room before pumping it back in the room, which also helps to keep the room at the perfect temperature.

It is important with residential split system air conditioners to choose the correct size to maximise performance and minimise running costs.

Air conditioners that are not sized correctly will not be as efficient and end up costing you more in both installation and running costs. So make sure, when choosing your split system air conditioner to know your room size, insulation, location and the orientation of where you are going to place the system. Our team takes the stress when choosing the right system and we will recommend the best options for your space.

Things that we will consider when recommending a residential air conditioner.

Room size – the floor space, type and the volume of the room are equally important when determining the correct air conditioner. High ceilings, floor types, window and wall types can affect the effectiveness of the air conditioning units. Insulation – The type of insulation that your walls and ceilings have can help cool your house down faster, which means you may need less from the air conditioner. Conversely, if there is only a little amount of insulation, a bigger unit may be needed. Location – The location of the split system air conditioner unit is very important to ensure that the room is cooled in all areas and that the air is evenly distributed. It needs to be in a place that can maximise airflow and efficiency. The team at Grey Shaw Air Conditioning can work with you to determine the right location. Orientation – Where the air conditioner points is another important factor when considering your air conditioner unit. Are there windows that let too much hot air in? Can the functionality of the air conditioner (the rotation, the fans and the speed) be able to get to all parts of the rooms? Our team will recommend the optimise position for your system.

Ducted air conditioners

Ducted air conditioners can cool every room in your home by using just one system.
In some systems you may be able to control the temperature of each room separately to ensure that each member of your family can maintain the right temperature for each other.
Ducted air conditioners are ideal for big houses. They work by moving air from one central unit (often placed on the roof) through a series of ducts to each room of the house.
Each room is called a “zone” which means you can control the flow and temperature to that zone. Having a ducted air conditioner reduces the cost of running multiple split system air conditioning which can be costly.
The benefits of ducted air conditioners are that they are much quieter to people within the house compared to split system air conditioners. With the indoor unit ceiling, air flows with little noise through the ducted system compared to split systems wall units.
